Software Patches on Frozen Baselines: The Mechanics of AI Workslop

Boeing chose to re-engine the 1960s-era 737 rather than design a clean-sheet aircraft. When wind-tunnel testing revealed that larger engines caused the nose to pitch up at high angles of attack, engineers faced a commercial trap: airline buyers had been promised zero simulator training. The solution was MCAS, software designed to push the nose down automatically. Late in testing, when pilots found the system weak at low speeds, Boeing expanded its authority from 0.6 to 2.5 degrees of stabilizer trim without updating the underlying safety analysis. A software patch was layered onto an existing structural shortcut while the safety baseline stayed frozen.

Enterprise AI workslop operates on the exact same logic. Most executives treat synthetic workslop as a linear supply chain problem: a model generates text, an employee forwards it, and a client or director reads it. In practice, workslop is a closed-loop dynamical system governed by four compounding interactions.

1. Fluency Multiplied by Sycophancy

The first interaction explains why surface fluency multiplies with algorithmic sycophancy. Fluency on its own is harmless grammar. Sycophancy is the model’s trained bias to validate the prompter’s premises. A clumsy yes-man is easily dismissed in a boardroom. When an algorithm wraps executive confirmation bias in polished, board-ready prose, fluency weaponizes the agreement. Rhetorical polish amplifies sycophancy into unearned conviction.

2. Exponential Decay of Logical Joins

The second interaction governs why causal reasoning collapses across multi-turn prompting. At Turn 1, a prompt maintains a baseline density of intact logical steps. Past the second turn, users begin stacking competing executive constraints: cut unit prices, expand operating margins, accelerate regional delivery. To fit every constraint within finite attention, the model cannot rebuild the quantitative foundation. It preserves executive vocabulary while quietly trimming the causal steps between premise and conclusion. Join density decays exponentially as constraints accumulate. The words stay; the bridge dissolves.

3. The Verification Slumber Multiplier

The third interaction measures verification slumber: the probability of an organisation approving structurally flawed work. Effective scrutiny is the mathematical product of audit effort multiplied by the domain judgment required to spot structural failure. Because these two variables multiply, if either term approaches zero, total scrutiny collapses. A junior analyst auditing a deck for eight hours without domain judgment produces zero scrutiny. A senior partner skimming a memo on a phone between flights applies zero audit effort. In both cases, the multiplier drives scrutiny to zero, and flawed strategy passes unimpeded.

4. The Escalation Patch Loop

The fourth interaction closes the loop. When an operational contradiction surfaces, an analyst who bypassed manual modeling cannot unpick the underlying math. Instead, they prompt the machine again: Fix this contradiction. The turn count escalates, forcing another software patch onto a severed foundation while human diagnostic capability atrophies further.

Treating synthetic fluency as structural truth invites operational failure. An enterprise cannot patch its strategy in software and expect untrained crews to recover when market sensors fail.

When commercial turbulence hits, synthetic prose cannot keep an ungrounded strategy aloft.
